Shuri African Restaurant is a straightforward, no-frills spot tucked into the Walnut Street strip east of downtown Dallas that lets the food and warm hospitality take center stage. This counter-service African restaurant serves up a focused menu of West African staples like egusi, fufu, and various richly sauced soups alongside hearty sides such as jollof rice and fried plantains. It’s the kind of place where the emphasis is on the food’s authenticity and generosity rather than on fancy décor or white-tablecloth formality.

Visitors here will find a casual, welcoming atmosphere where the owner and staff often take the time to explain dishes and traditions, making it especially approachable for those new to Nigerian cuisine. Many patrons come looking for the comforting, bold flavors of dishes like goat meat pepper soup or roasted tilapia, which arrive tender, well-seasoned, and paired with familiar staples like fried or jollof rice. Portions are generous, making it a good option for a hearty lunch or dinner where sharing plates and sampling multiple dishes work well.

Shuri fits well into the neighborhood’s mix of casual eateries, serving local diners who appreciate genuine taste and a friendly, laid-back setting. The interior is modest with simple seating that encourages a quick, satisfying meal rather than lingering over several courses, so it’s best for those wanting an authentic, unfussy African dining experience without a lot of ceremony. Whether you’re a curious first-timer or someone craving the specific flavors of Nigerian soups and pounded yam, this spot delivers a comfortable introduction with a strong sense of genuine hospitality.

This was a great place! I had never been to an African restaurant (except for Ethiopian restaurants) before. I asked for a recommendation and ordered the Egussi Soup with beef. It was served with fufu. The food was delicious. This was all new to me so they didn't make fun of my for using silverware even though it's supposed to be eaten with your hands!

Authentic Flavor Explosion! I had the pleasure of dining at this incredible African restaurant, and let me just say—every bite delivered bold, unforgettable flavor. I ordered the goat meat pepper soup, and it was outstanding. The meat was tender and well-seasoned, cooked to perfection with just the right kick of spice that warms your chest without overpowering the palate. I paired it with steamed rice and a side of vegetable soup, which complemented the dish beautifully. The vegetable soup was hearty and flavorful, a perfect balance to the heat of the pepper soup. You can tell the food is made with love and authentic technique. If you’re craving real African cuisine that delivers on taste, this spot does not miss. I’ll definitely be back!

First time trying Nigerian food. The gentleman who runs the place was so kind and welcoming to us. He took time to explain all the dishes and flavors and even how to eat with fufu. He then gave us several generous samples of different dishes. I felt like we were guests at his house. The egusi was yummy as was the jolloff rice and okra. Counter service spot with seating - come for the food and experience!

10/10 experience. From the staff to the rice and stew I ordered. I paid $20 for enough serving for 4-5 people with self control/portion control lol. I’m not one of those people and it was hard to not finish it in one sitting. Meat was veryyyyy tender… came apart with just a spoon. The stew tasted like my own version so I might not even stress myself to cook again. Can’t wait to try the okra soup and eba.
